Dogs and cats were popular subject on Japanese needle tins.  His Masters Voice was the main brand for the Victor Talking Machine Co in Japan and the mascot was the famous dog known as 'Nipper'.  What originally started out as an image of a dog with a gramophone ended up being a dog in all sorts of settings with all sorts of objects, as you can see below.

Cats were featured less often but the Black Cat brand had many variations of their popular design.
